1861 notes and info letter

July 16,1861: how are you and hows the farm, life in the war is pretty hard. right now i am placed in a camp in Virginia. two days ago there was a battle at Manassas and bull run river, president Lincoln called 37,000 men to cut off the rail road in mannssas luckily they did not succeed and we won the battle causing them to retreat. There were only 1,982 causalities for the south and 2,896 causalities for the north.

April 19,1861: the first casualties were not on the battlefield. and the south had less soldiers. This showed that president Lincoln had difficulties recruiting his soldiers and never had experience in war.

December 21 1861: we rested and planned are next attacks and focused on are drills and gathering supplies like guns and food. there was new rifle released  called the repeating rifle it is a semi automatic rifle that shoots led bullets and has a lever mechanism.
