Newspaper Article 1865

Four days ago, this era of violence and division in our country ended. By this, I am referring to the dreadful war that has been raging for four years. This ending came after the battle of Saylor's Creek when General Robert E. Lee was out of options and was outnumbered. After this last battle, a meeting was called between General Garant and defeated General Lee. The purpose of this meeting was to agree on the terms of surrender. The meeting took place in the house of Wilmore McLean, ironically the man who hosted General P.G.T Beauregard and his men in the battle of Bull Run.  However, after agreeing to give up their guns, supplies, and battle flags, the Confederacy withdraws with the promise not to fight and fall under the Unions laws and rules.  But for now, 1865 is the year our country has fallen to peace until the next war breaks out and our country is set aflame with violence once again.

Dear Sally,         I miss home very much but I must keep fighting. One of the things I miss the most is your apple pie. I put the recipe for the apple pie that we have here below. In your next letter can you send me your recipe. It won't be near as good as yours but it will be closer than the one here.                        Love,                             Fitzhugh Johnston Pettigrew

Letter Home 1864

Millicent, I wish I was writing of joyous victories for the Confederacy, but sadly I am reporting unfortunate events that have come into the path of the South. As I am sure you have heard by now of the  Union's capturing of Atlanta. Sherman's men marched into Georgia destroying everyone and everything in their paths. They killed and burned, not just soldiers, but also innocent people. We never thought they'd reach Atlanta, we were unprepared for their raid. I fear that this will weaken and frighten our men.  For not only was this just a loss,  but the Union now has control of one of our only manufacturing cities.  I do not know how this will impact our supplies yet, but hope it will not.  This will split the South in two.  I hope the next time I write it is with good news and in a time of high spirits. I hope all is well on the farm and that it is running smoothly. I will try to write soon, but I must go now. -George

Sherman's group is very reckless and dangerous they have destroyed are communication and split us apart from the confederate, and destroyed all the farms and houses. I hope you and the children are okay this war is becoming mayhem and the north is growing much more stronger.
