1863 letter Steven.B Madden

 Dear: Father

the war has had its up and downs there was a battle two days ago and we are placed Virginia  and have been here for solid week. General  lee sent 75,000 men to Gettysburg Pennsylvania  the Yankees was pushed back into town by the end of the day they had controlled the  high ground.
By the next day the Yankees had the high ground and the advantage and we were forced to pushed up  little round top. Yankees were forced to push down because they ran out of ammo with bayonets, we lost a lot of men during day 2 and were forced to retreat. Day three was not a winning day and was terrible for us. General lee sent Heavy artillery and 12,000 men at 3 p.m to take out the Yankees.   It was total failure for us we had to retreat to the Potomac river overall the battle was probably the most gruesome battle and hard for the south we gave a good fight and wont slip of next time.

Sincerely: Steven.B Madden
