George Otott Diary Entries of 1861

April 20, 1861
Yesterday was a day of death, but not defeat. For the first casualties were not on the battlefield rather in Baltimore. While it was a dreadful day and the South lost a small number of men (less than 10), it till proved beneficial for the Confederacy. Lincoln and the north now have the difficulty of men not wanting to be drafted.

While it has been a while since I have written, a large victory has been won. We, the Confederacy, have won the first major battle of this war. The battle was fought near Manassas and Bull Run River and was about 30 miles from Washington. While the North thought it would be an easy win, they did not foresee our brilliant victory.  After the win, we settled down and dined on the runaway civilians food and champagne.

This year has been filled with wins and losses, deaths and moments of life. We celebrated Christmas and sang songs of the holiday and to raise southern spirits. Dixie was sung and drills were forgotten. Next year brings new fights to fight and new battles to win.
