Newspaper Article 1865

Four days ago, this era of violence and division in our country ended. By this, I am referring to the dreadful war that has been raging for four years. This ending came after the battle of Saylor's Creek when General Robert E. Lee was out of options and was outnumbered. After this last battle, a meeting was called between General Garant and defeated General Lee. The purpose of this meeting was to agree on the terms of surrender. The meeting took place in the house of Wilmore McLean, ironically the man who hosted General P.G.T Beauregard and his men in the battle of Bull Run.  However, after agreeing to give up their guns, supplies, and battle flags, the Confederacy withdraws with the promise not to fight and fall under the Unions laws and rules.  But for now, 1865 is the year our country has fallen to peace until the next war breaks out and our country is set aflame with violence once again.

Dear Sally,         I miss home very much but I must keep fighting. One of the things I miss the most is your apple pie. I put the recipe for the apple pie that we have here below. In your next letter can you send me your recipe. It won't be near as good as yours but it will be closer than the one here.                        Love,                             Fitzhugh Johnston Pettigrew

Letter Home 1864

Millicent, I wish I was writing of joyous victories for the Confederacy, but sadly I am reporting unfortunate events that have come into the path of the South. As I am sure you have heard by now of the  Union's capturing of Atlanta. Sherman's men marched into Georgia destroying everyone and everything in their paths. They killed and burned, not just soldiers, but also innocent people. We never thought they'd reach Atlanta, we were unprepared for their raid. I fear that this will weaken and frighten our men.  For not only was this just a loss,  but the Union now has control of one of our only manufacturing cities.  I do not know how this will impact our supplies yet, but hope it will not.  This will split the South in two.  I hope the next time I write it is with good news and in a time of high spirits. I hope all is well on the farm and that it is running smoothly. I will try to write soon, but I must go now. -George

Dear: beloved wife The war is not going as plan, Atlanta has fallen and the north is taking over and destroying every thing. we are placed in south Carolina, the north has wiped out everything in there path and destroying all of are supplies. Atlanta is one of are major manufacturing  areas and this is taking a major tool on us. Sherman's group is very reckless and dangerous they have destroyed are communication and split us apart from the confederate, and destroyed all the farms and houses. I hope you and the children are okay this war is becoming mayhem and the north is growing much more stronger. I wish I was with you right now and the children but the south needs my help. we will be moving camps in a couple of days because the fall of Atalanta but we shall give a good fight. Sincerely: Steven.B Madden

1863 letter Steven.B Madden

Dear: Father the war has had its up and downs there was a battle two days ago and we are placed Virginia  and have been here for solid week. General  lee sent 75,000 men to Gettysburg Pennsylvania   the Yankees was pushed back into town by the end of the day they had controlled the  high ground. By the next day the Yankees had the high ground and the advantage and we were forced to pushed up  little round top.  Yankees were forced to push down because they ran out of ammo with bayonets, we lost a lot of men during day 2 and were forced to retreat.  Day three was not a winning day and was terrible for us. General lee sent Heavy artillery and 12,000 men at 3 p.m to take out the Yankees.   It was total failure for us we had to retreat to the Potomac river overall the battle was probably the most gruesome battle and hard for the south we gave a good fight and wont slip of next time. Sincerely: Steven.B Madden
WORD IN THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG!!

update 1862 Steven. B Madden

Dear: Mabel The war has been going by so far we have won two  battles  and have been doing good so far on leading are troops and gathering supplies right now I am placed in a camp in Virginia. There was a battle in Sharpsburg Washington we did not win the battle but we showed the Yankees what we re made out of. General lee did a amazing job leading the army w e fought hard but the north out numbered us and took control of the right flank .  We lost a 10,320 of are men and was a terrific fight but those that we lost gave a amazing fight to the north and showed the souths power. There was a other battle in Virginia were the bull run battle was , General lee lead the battle and Stone wall Jackson  . We successfully won the battle Against early union   soldiers   and  showed the north are good leading and statics. But overall we have taken the upper hand in this war and are planning to win.        Sincerely: ur husband Steven B. Madden

1861 Update - Colonel Pettigrew

Dear Sally,           As you probably know  President Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers . I have to be here to support our side. I know that all of the northern  states had a good response to this request .  I have seen both positive and negative editorials on his request . The first casualties have occurred although they did not occur on the battlefield but in the city of Baltimore .  Soldiers from Massachusetts were marching towards Washington, D.C. when a group of citizens tried to stop their march. Shots were fired from both sides, resulting in eleven deaths. This makes me very happy because this proves President Lincoln will have difficulties recruiting troops from the so-called border states.  I will be home as soon as I can, Fitzhugh Johnston Pettigrew

1861 notes and info letter

July 16,1861: how are you and hows the farm, life in the war is pretty hard. right now i am placed in a camp in Virginia. two days ago there was a battle at Manassas and bull run river, president Lincoln called 37,000 men to cut off the rail road in mannssas luckily they did not succeed and we won the battle causing them to retreat. There were only 1,982 causalities for the south and 2,896 causalities for the north.    April 19,1861: the first casualties were not on the battlefield . and the south had less soldiers. This showed that president Lincoln had difficulties recruiting his soldiers and never had experience in war.   December 21 1861: we rested and planned are next attacks and focused on are drills  and gathering supplies like guns  and food . there was new rifle released  called the r epeating rifle it is a semi automatic rifle that shoots led bullets and has a lever mechanism.

George Otott Diary Entries of 1861

April 20, 1861 Yesterday was a day of death, but not defeat. For the first casualties were not on the battlefield rather in Baltimore . While it was a dreadful day and the South lost a small number of men (less than 10) , it till proved beneficial for the Confederacy . Lincoln and the north now have the difficulty of men not wanting to be drafted.  July 24, 1861 While it has been a while since I have written, a large victory has been won. We, the Confederacy, have won the first major battle of this war.  The battle was fought near Manassas and Bull Run River and was about 30 miles from Washington.  While the North thought it would be an easy win , they did not foresee our brilliant victory.   After the win, we settled down and dined on the runaway civilians food and champagne.   December 31, 1861 This year has been filled with wins and losses, deaths and moments of life. We celebrated Christmas and sang songs of the holiday and to raise southern spirits. Dixie was sung a

Dear family Steven B. Madden

Dear Loving wife and my beautiful children,I miss you all very much and which I was with all you right now but the south needs my help. I am staying in a camp in Florida and the beach is beautiful and the camp well less so, the food here is okay  but not as close as food at home . how are the slaves doing and how are the children, hows billy is he sick and did any of the slaves get sick.  if so please call the doctor to find out what it is. Have you heard from my father I worry about him and how he is all by himself. the war has been going well so far we have claimed fort Sumter and there were no casualties. Jefferson Davis is the president of the Confederate army and all south states have succeeded. But president Lincoln has put a group of 75,000 men  to try to stop us. But that man underestimates the power of the south ,But so far we are doing good and fighting for are rights and are slaves I wish you all the best and hope you all are fine and we end this war.  sincerely : Steven
